第一章 人情の碗 茶道は、日常生活のむさくるしい諸事実の中に有る美を崇拝することを根底とする儀式である。それは純粋と調和を、人が互いに思いやりを抱くことの不思議さを、社会秩序のロマンティシズムを諄々（じゅんじゅん）と心に刻み付ける。それは本質的に不完全なものの崇拝であり、われわれが知っている人生というこの不可能なものの中に、何か可能なものを成し遂げようとする繊細な企てである。

その間に、一服のお茶をすすろうではないか。午後の陽光は竹林を照らし、泉は喜びに泡立ち、松籟（しょうらい）はわが茶釜に聞こえる。はかないことを夢見、美しくおろかしいことへの思いにふけろうではないか。

Meanwhile, let us have a sip of tea. The afternoon glow is brightening the bamboos, the fountains are bubbling with delight, the soughing of the pines is heard in our kettle. Let us dream of evanescence, and linger in the beautiful foolishness of thing.
